seshu,
I did applied Patches many time, even I had prepared one doucment you can refer that, But the patch was applied for windows Server. You can follow the same with linux.
SIMPLE STEPS TO WORK ON CPU PATCH APPLY FOR WINDOWS ENVIROMENT
Overview:
Oracle recommending every quarter to apply CPU patches to fix the bakes in a database. Normally the patch will be releasing every year January, April, July and October months. And the patch will support 32X, 64X bit databases. Once you downloaded the patch files from the oracle site you may copied any one of the server. Then
i) Unzip the folders, You can get Opatch Directory and Opatch Folders.
ii) Copy the OPatch in to Oracle_Home, and rename it if you have existing one.
1) Check the invalid objects before applying OPATCH in to the database
SQL> SELECT OBJECT_NAME FROM DBA_OBJECTS WHERE STATUS = ‘INVALID’;
2) Shutdown the Services, Includes Oracle Services, Job schedulers, DB console, MTS service etc.,
3) Inform to the Monitoring Team, OS Team for the outage of the database, and ask them to ignore alerts from this database.
4) Make sure there is no jobs running, while stopping the services.
5) Verify Process Explorer(For Windows) to check all the services are stopped, Otherwise You will get an error while applying patches.
6)Take a Backup of Oracle_home, and Oracle Invetory Located into C:\programfiles\oracle\Inventory)
7) Now open a cmd prompt, and set the oracle_home, oracle_sid, and oracle_path exactly.
SET ORACLE_HOME=D:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\db_1
SET ORACLE_SID=TEST
SET PATH=D:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\db_1\bin;%PATH%
8) Go to the downloded Patch Directory, and apply Opatch, Before that check OPatch already exists.
cd D:\July2011CPU\12429528
D:\July2011CPU\12429528>%ORACLE_HOME/Opatch lsinventory
D:\July2011CPU\12429528>%ORACLE_HOME/Opatch apply
9) Once the OPatch is complete check the logs in to /Oracle_Home/cfgtoollogs/opatch, if you find any ddl, exe files, Cross check all the service are stopped, and chek any files are open/active.
10)Once the Opatch is Succeded, Start the Oracle Service, and connect to the database. Run the command catcpu.sql.
SET ORACLE_SID=
sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect sys/ as sysdba
SQL> startup open
SQL> @%ORACLE_HOME%\Bundle\Patch13\catcpu.sql
SQL> quit
Notedown for 11g catcpu.sql is located into Patch13, and 10g is Patch45.
11) Recomplie the Views, using utlrp.sql which located into
SQL> @%ORACLE_HOME%\RDBMS\ADMIN\UTLRP.SQL
12) Verify that the view recompilation has been performed for the database, by executing the following statement. If the view recompilation has been performed, this statement returns one row. If the view recompilation has not been performed, this statement returns no rows.
SELECT * FROM registry$history where ID = ‘6452863’;
ID is the Patch ID number.
13) Last but not least, Opatch needs to be a outage window, So this activity will be taken by Non-business hours only, without affect the business and without affect the production.
